EXCLUSIVE: Thai director Banjong Pisanthanakun has reunited with star Davika Hoorne for psychological horror Inherit, which GDH 559 is pre-selling at the Cannes market.

Davika from Banjong’s 2013 smash hit Pee Mak plays Grandma Woranart, an 80-year-old grandmother who suddenly returns looking like a woman in her 30s after having disappeared for half a century. But her return brings terrifying hauntings to her family, with her 18-year-old granddaughter destined as the next heir to the demon. A first look at Hoorne in a promotional image for the film can be seen above.

The story is based on a classic Thai novel, which has previously been adapted into three hit TV dramas and is receiving the feature film treatment for the first time. The project is at script stage with Banjong a co-writer. Pre-production for the big-scale feature is expected to start in the third quarter.

Banjong said he had carried the story with him since childhood and re-read it during the pandemic. “At its core, it’s a story about power, legacy, and the darkness we inherit,” he said. “It’s a Thai story but told with the scale and sophistication that international audiences crave.”

Banjong has a strong track record as a horror master with credits including Shutter, Pee Mak and The Medium.

Davika leads the cast of Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke’s A Useful Ghost, which will premiere in Critics Week as the first Thai film selected for Cannes in a decade.

GDH, the studio behind How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies – a box office phenomenon that became the first Thai film ever shortlisted for the Oscars – is also bringing to the market Fast & Feel Love director Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit’s Human Resource, an abortion drama about a woman who wrestles with the decision to terminate her pregnancy, starring Prapamonton Eiamchan and Paopetch Charoensook.
