
BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival will close with the UK premiere of Sandulela Asanda’s Black Burns Fast on Saturday, March 28.
The festival has also selected Paloma Schiedeman’s Big Girls Don’t Cry as a Special Presentation title, in its UK premiere on March 26.
Set in a prestigious South African boarding school, Black Burns Fast follows the studios Luthando, whose suppressed desires are ignited by the arrival of a new girl in her class.
The film had its world premiere at Durban International Film Festival in July last year, and will have its international premiere in the Generation 14plus strand at Berlin this month.
It is produced by Cait Pansegrouw and Elias Ribeiro for Urucu Media, with Amazon Prime handling world sales.
Big Girls Don’t Cry had its world premiere in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at Sundance Film Festival last month. Produced by Vicky Pope and Thomas Coppell, the film follows a transformative summer for a 14-year-old girl in rural New Zealand. It is the first feature to come through Jane Campion’s A Wave In The Ocean, the film school she established in 2022.
The 2026 BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival will open with the world premiere of Jennifer Kroot’s documentary Hunky Jesus.
The festival will run from March 18-29, with the full lineup for its 40th edition unveiled on February 17.
