Production on James Watkins’ Clayface is underway in Liverpool for Warner Bros.

The DC villain feature is shooting on location in the city, which has been transformed into Gotham City – the fictional municipality often associated with New York. Production is also based at Warner Bros Leavesden.

Directed by James Watkins, Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries is playing the titular Clayface, a shape-shifting creature who alternates between a villain and an ally of Batman. According to DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, the film does not exist in the same cinematic universe as Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which is gearing up to shoot its sequel, also in the UK, early next year.

Clayface is produced by Gunn and Peter Safran for DC Studios with Reeves and Lynn Harris. Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini wrote the screenplay. Further cast include Naomi Ackie, Eddie Marsan and Max Minghella.

Warner Bros have scheduled a release for September 11, 2026.
