‘Cambodian Beer Dreams’

EXCLUSIVE: Paris-based sales outfit CAT&Docs has boarded world sales rights on Laurits Nansen’s Cambodian Beer Dreams.

The film will have its world premiere in the competitive F:Act award section next month at Denmark’s CPH:DOX.

The film looks at the aggressive marketing battle for the rapidly growing beer market in Cambodia; at an activist fighting to introduce a previously-abandoned national alcohol law; and at ordinary Cambodians who dream of the beer industry being their ticket to a better life.

The film is produced by Malene Flindt Pedersen and Signe Skov Thomsen for Denmark’s Hansen & Pedersen, with backing from the Danish Film Institute, FilmFyn and DR.

Danish director Nansen’s filmography includes co-directing documentary mini-series Welcome To The Frontline, and TV feature documentary The Town Where Children Disappear.

“Through a kaleidoscopic perspective, Cambodian Beer Dreams seeks to capture the nuances of ordinary people who are affected by, and depend on, Cambodia’s beer culture in one way or another,” said Nansen. “My hope is that the film invites audiences into a universe that may seem absurd and tragic, yet at the same time raises universal questions about what happens to people and morality when alcohol and immense market forces are unleashed without any real limitations.”
