Docaviv, the Tel Aviv International Documentary Film Festival, has confirmed artistic director Michal Weits is recovering with her family after their home was destroyed by a missile during the Israel-Iran war on June 22.
The festival said Weits was sheltering with her husband and two young children in the safe room of their Tel Aviv house when it was hit by the Iranian missile. All four survived.
Docaviv told Screen all four family members are recovering and resting in a hotel.
“I’m just filled with a deep sense of gratitude that’s stronger and greater than any injury I have,” said Weits in a statement shared by the festival to Screen. “I look at the photos of our home completely destroyed, reduced to a pile of dust and the safe room that’s barely standing, and I still can’t believe it.”
The festival said: “Michal is strong and receiving great support from her family, colleagues, and friends. The Docaviv team wishes for her full recovery as soon as possible and we hope to have peace in our region so we can all resume our daily lives and begin planning the next edition of the festival.”
Weits joined Docaviv as artistic director last year. This year’s edition of the festival ran from May 22-31.
She is also an acclaimed filmmaker, directing 2021 documentary Blue Box and producing Surviving October 7th: We Will Dance Again and Golda’s War Diaries among others.
