EXCLUSIVE: A Good Child by Singapore’s Ong Kuo Sin’s has secured distribution in Hong Kong and Taiwan after being set as the closing film of Osaka Asian Film Festival’s (OAFF) Expo 2025 edition.
The drag queen drama, starring rising talent Richie Koh, will receive its world premiere at OAFF on September 7 before opening in Singapore on October 9 through Clover Films, which also handles international sales, and Golden Village Pictures.
Taiwan’s Applause Entertainment and Hong Kong’s Emperor Motion Pictures are set to release the film in their respective territories in early December.
The film follows a drag queen who returns home to care for his estranged mother suffering from dementia, only to discover a healing opportunity when he pretends to be his mother’s long-lost daughter.
Alongside Koh, the ensemble cast includes veteran Hong Hui Fang (Ajoomma), Johnny Lu, Charlie Goh and Cheryl Chou.
It is adapted from the life story of Christopher Lim, a drag queen in Singapore more commonly known as Sammi Zhen. Director Ong met Lim while researching musical comedy Number 1, which earned a Golden Horse best actor nomination in 2020 for Mark Lee for his role as an out-of-work married man who becomes an accidental drag performer.
Backers include SL Capital Ventures, Byleft Productions and Clover Films, in association with One Tree Holdings and with the support of the Singapore Film Commission and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA).
A Good Child marks the seventh feature by director Ong whose recent works include Lunar New Year film Reunion Dinner, Number 2 and upcoming anthology film Kopitiam Days. He is also executive producer of long-running TV dramas Tanglin and Kin.
The 21st OAFF, which runs from August 29-September 7 is a special edition to coincide with Expo 2025 Osaka – an international exhibition in which Japan will showcase its culture, technology and innovations. It marks the second OAFF of the year, following its 20th edition in its usual slot in mid-March.
As previously announced, the 21st OAFF will open with the newly restored 2K version of Taiwanese director Liao Hsiang-Hsiung’s Tracing to Expo ’70, which features superstar Judy Ongg and – just as the Expo returns to Osaka – returns to the big screen after 55 years.
