Imax has reported a 2025 global box office gross of $1.28bn, 40% up on last year and a record for the company.
The total was 13% up on Imax’s previous record tally, recorded in 2019.
The large format cinema market leader also had its best year ever in North America, with a total gross of $449m; the international marketplace (excluding China), with $427m; and China, with $407m.
Imax said its estimated box office market share for the year (based on projections from Gower Street Analytics and Box Office Mojo) was 3.8%, another record.
The year’s Imax slate was the largest ever, with 122 new releases, and included a record 67 international films from 14 countries. That resulted in a record local language box office of $405m, up 65% from 2023’s previous best figure.
The company’s five biggest individual performers during the year were Chinese animated sequel Ne Zha 2, with a gross of $166.7m; Avatar: Fire And Ash with $112 million; F1: The Movie with $97.6m; Japanese anime hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle with $95.9m; and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning with $75.8m.
Imax is predicting a take of $1.4bn for 2026, when its slate will include Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu, The Odyssey (the first theatrical feature shot entirely with Imax film cameras), Narnia and Dune: Part Three.
Company CEO Rich Gelfond commented: “2025 was truly a transformational year for Imax in which we leveled up our performance across our business — capturing a greater share of total box office with a wider variety of releases across an expanding global footprint. We see no signs of slowing down given a very promising slate ahead and the consistency of our market share gains, as filmmakers, studios, and audiences worldwide continue to gravitate toward the Imax experience.”
