‘Peter Hujar’s Day’

EXCLUSIVE: Picturehouse Entertainment has picked up UK-Ireland rights for Ira Sachs’ Peter Hujar’s Day, starring Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall.

The Sundance and Berlinale title will be released theatrically in the territory on January 2 2026, after playing at BFI London Film Festival in October.

Picturehouse acquired the UK-Ireland rights from Janus Films, which holds the North American rights, and will partner on release strategy and the marketing campaign.

The film follows a conversation recorded in 1974 between photographer Peter Hujar and writer Linda Rosenkrantz. Their talk that day focused on a single 24-hours in the life of Hujar, the famously uncompromising artist who was one of the most important figures in downtown New York’s iconic cultural scene of the 1970s and ‘80s, set entirely in Rosenkrantz’s Manhattan apartment. The film is based on a book of the same name by Rosenkrantz.

Jordan Drake and Jonah Disend serve as the US producers on the production alongside Berlin-based One Two Films. Fred Burle and Aaron Craig co-produced.

Sachs and Whishaw have previously worked together on Sachs’ 2023 Sundance premiere Passages, distributed by Mubi.

“Peter Hujar’s Day is truly original with incredible performances,” said Clare Binns, managing director of Picturehouse Entertainment. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Ira once again, and to partner with the talented team at Janus Films to bring a unique and special film to UK and Irish audiences. These are performances that deserve to be recognised by audiences and awards voters. We are eager to begin working on the campaign.”

The film is a Complementary Colors, Blink Productions and Primo Content presentation in association with We Are Films and Materia Cinema.

Executive producers are Lucas Joaquin, Paul Weston, Corin Taylor, Michelle Jaffe, Martin Kalina, Nicolas Pérez Veiga, Alfredo Pérez Veiga, Franklin Laviola, Nicholas Laviola, Ellis Fox, Sol Bondy, Nadine Rothschild, Inés Massa, Whishaw, Hall and Adam Kersh. Alex Mitow serves as associate producer.
