‘The Quiet Girl’

Colm Bairéad’s debut The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin) won the main prize at the 2022 Irish Film And Television Academy (IFTA) awards, presented during a virtual ceremony on Saturday night (March 12).

Irish-language drama The Quiet Girl follows a young girl as she spends the summer away from her dysfunctional family in 1980s Ireland, and goes to stay with a foster couple. The drama won the prize for best film – the first time in IFTA history that an Irish-language film has taken this award.

Bairéad also took home the prize for best director and rising star, while Catherine Clinch won in the lead actress category. The feature also scooped four awards in the craft categories – cinematography, editing, production design and original score.

Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast, which was joint frontrunner with The Quiet Girl with 10 nominations apiece, only took home two prizes – best script (film) for Branagh and best supporting actor (film) for Ciarán Hinds. Belfast won for outstanding British film at the Baftas on Sunday night (March 13).

In the TV drama categories, Dublin-set crime drama Kin was awarded with all but one prize, including a second win for Hinds, in the supporting actor (drama) category.
