EXCLUSIVE: Jakarta is making its debut at the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) to promote Indonesia’s capital as a destination for international filmmakers and to prepare for the launch of Jakarta Film Commission.

Jakarta is envisioned to become a film city by 2027 to coincide with the celebration of its 500th anniversary, following the appointment of former actor Rano Karno as vice governor of the city.

Jakarta has started to participate in international filmmarkets, beginning with Cannes in May and now Busan. The Jakarta Metropolitan Area comprises Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi.

A new Jakarta Film Commission is also on the cards. The independent body would be managed by film industry professionals, aimed at supporting both local and international productions. A delegation from the city government is attending ACFM to support the initiative and meet with counterparts such as Busan Film Commission to learn from its experience developing such an organisation

“We are transforming Jakarta into a friendly international film city, with full commitment to nurturing talent, empowering creators and supporting the film industry,” said Andhika Permata, head of the Jakarta provincial tourism and creative economy office.

In addition to the Jakarta City Government market stand, a further 10 Indonesian companies including Visinema, MD Entertainment and Magma Entertainment are taking part at ACFM in the separate Indonesia Pavilion organised by the Ministry of Culture.

A trio of Indonesian features are making their world premieres at Busan, including Reza Rahadian’s On Your Lap in the Vision section, Ho Wi Ding’s Mothernet and Riri Riza’s Rangga & Cinta.

Jakarta experienced protests in late August that saw the number of daily showtimes and admissions to cinemas drop for several days. However, the situation has reportedly returned to normal.
