Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, UK documentarian Mark Cousins and Belgian filmmaker Lukas Dhont are among the 640 new members of the European Film Academy.
The fresh intake spans 50 countries and comprises 51% women, 48% men and 1% non-binary.
Trier recently directed Sentimental Value, which won the best international feature Oscar earlier this year. Dhont’s recent film Coward premiered in Competition at Cannes film festival. Cousins curated the 2026 European Film Awards ceremony.
Further new members include UK producer Jim Wilson, whose recent credits include The Zone Of Interest and The Voice Of Hind Rajab; Norwegian actor Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Oscar-nominated for Sentimental Value; and Chilean producer Juan de Dios Larraín of Fabula, the company he runs with brother Pablo Larraín.
The intake also includes 19% of people under 36, in line with the Academy’s updated eligibility criteria to strengthen the representation of younger creatives.
These members are eligible for “Emerging Membership” if they have received noteworthy credits as head of department on either one feature-length film or three short films, the latter marking a new addition to the rules. Another 19% of new members represent the arts and crafts sectors of cinema, with the Academy keen to expand its chapter structure even further in the coming years.
Juliette Binoche has been president of the European Film Academy since 2024. The total number of members now stands at around 5,700.
