‘Jurassic Park Rebirth’

The dinosaurs are back as Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth arrived at number one over July Fourth holiday weekend on a robust $147.3m five-day estimated launch in North America.

The tentpole directed by Gareth Edwards, the British director behind Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali earned $91.5m from 4,308 theatres over the Friday-to-Sunday three-day portion. That is some way behind the $145.1m three-day June 2022 debut of Jurassic World: Dominion but enough for the third-highest three-day bow of the year so far behind A Minecraft Movie and Lilo & Stitch.

This was also the fourth-highest July Fourth five-day debut behind The Twilight Saga: The Eclipse, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, and Spider-Man 2, and the fourth-highest July Fourth three-day opening weekend behind Minions: Rise Of Gru, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Rebirth earned $26.3m on Friday, $36.7m on Saturday, and $28.5m on Sunday. The tentpole drew a 59% male crowd, and 57% was aged 25 and above, with the 18-24 bracket drawing the largest portion of film-goers on 24%. By ethnicity, the breakdown was: Caucasians 46%, Hispanics 26%, African Americans 13%, and Asians 9%.

With schools out for the holidays, Rebirth is expected to hold well throughout July – although Superman arrives next week. 2015’s Jurassic World finished on a franchise-best $653.4m. in North America.

Combined with $171m from 82 territories, a rousing global tally of $318.3m delivered the top opening of 2025 so far, and the second-highest debut of the franchise behind Jurassic World. Screen will report territory grosses on Monday.

Apple Original Films’ F1 starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris crossed $100m in its second weekend, ranking number two after a 54% drop on an estimated $26.1m from 3,732 sites. The $109.5m running total easily ranks as Apple’s high-grossing release to date in what has been a spotty run over the past several years. Warner Bros handles theatrical distribution on the motor racing tentpole from director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Imax sites generated $7.6m and captured 29% of weekend business, rising to a $27.4m tally that has accounted for 25% of the film’s total North American box office.

DreamWorks Animations’ How To Train Your Dragon ranks third via Universal following an $11m haul from 3,714 sites in the fourth weekend that pushed the tally to an excellent $224m. Disney/Pixar’s Elio in fourth place fell 45% to $5.7m from 3,235 sites in its third weekend for a lacklustre $55.1m running total.

Rounding out the top five was Columbia Pictures’ 28 Years Later directed by Danny Boyle from a screenplay by Alex Garland. It added $4.6m in its third session to reach $60.2m – by far the highest in the franchise. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Alfie Williams star.

Universal/Blumhouse’s M3GAN 2.0 added $3.8m for $18.6m after two weekends and fell to sixth place. Commentary in the media last week centred on the notion that the film’s tonal shifts from the 2022 hit may have confused audiences. Universal executives will not be unduly bothered given Blumhouse’s long run of low-budget hits, although it is understood Jason Blum is reviewing his slate.

Celine Song’s Materialists earned $1.3m from 1,027 screens to reach $33.5m after four weekends through A24. Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans star in the love triangle, Song’s follow-up to her 2023 Oscar-nomination Past Lives. A24 also reported that Eva Victor’s Sorry Baby, which premiered in Sundance and played Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, grossed $135,916 in its second weekend from 14 screens for an early $265,560 tally.

The re-release of This Is Spinal Tap opened at number 10 and is projected to earn $1.1m over Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Rob Reiner’s classic 1984 mockumentary about a hapless British heavy metal band opened through a partnership between Fathom Entertainment and Bleecker Street and due to demand will play three extra dates on July 8, 9, and 10. Bleecker will release the all-new Spinal Tap II: The End Continues on September 12.
