Acclaimed Korean filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin is to direct political drama The Generals for Netflix, based around real-life historical figures Roh Tae-woo and Chun Doo-hwan.
Yoon is known for drama The Unforgiven, which played at Cannes in 2005, and action thriller The Spy Gone North, which screened at Cannes in 2018 and was his last feature.
The Generals (working title) reunites him with streamer Netflix following 2022 drama series Narco-Saints.
The upcoming film centres on Roh, a lifelong second-in-command who presents himself as an “ordinary person” while manoeuvring behind the scenes beside Chun, a dictator wielding absolute power. Surrounded by allies, rivals and functionaries with their own agendas, Roh navigates a dense network of relationships in his bid to seize the throne for himself.
Chun was an army general who served as the fifth president of South Korea from 1980-88, ruling the country as a military dictator. Roh was also an army general who eventually succeeded Chun and served as president from 1988-93.
Son Suk-ku, known for performances in hits like A Killer Paradox and D.P. as well as blockbuster The Roundup — will play Roh.
Ha, who previously worked with Yoon in Narco-Saints, Kundo, Nameless Gangster, Beastie Boys and The Unforgiven, will take the role of Chun.
The cast also includes Ji Chang-wook (Revolver), Hyun Bong-sik (Narco-Saints) and Seo Hyun-woo (Decision To Leave).
Producers are Moonlight Film and Sanai Pictures. A release date has yet to be announced.
