‘Spencer’

Kristen Stewart has missed out on a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nomination for her role as Princess Diana in Spencer, in the nominations which were announced on Wednesday, January 12.

Despite being lauded by critics for her portrayal of the late Princessand having been nominated for best dramatic film actress at last Sunday’s Golden Globes and making it onto today’s Bafta longlist, Stewart was a surprise omission from the five nominees.

Instead, those to make the cut include Jennifer Hudson for her performance as Aretha Franklin in Respect.

Stewart’s absence is a blow to her Oscar chances although she still remains very much in the running for a nod given the Academy’s broader voting base that is not comprised solely of actors, who do form a large contingent. The winner of the SAG for best actress has gone on to win the equivalent Oscar in nine of the last 12 years, and was nominated on the other three occasions.

In the absence of the hoopla and scrutiny that usually follows the Globes, which played out behind closed doors last weekend, SAG offers the first significant signpost of Academy Award prospects this year.

The Power Of The Dog secured the most film nominations with three, for Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee, although it did not earn an ensemble nod, which is a reliable precursor to a best picture Oscar nomination and has significant form as an indicator of the eventual best picture win.

However with 10 best picture nomination slots up for grabs at the Academy Awards, Jane Campion’s film is widely regarded to be on that list. Five of the SAG ensemble winners of the past 11 years have gone on to win the best picture Oscar: Parasite in 2019; Spotlight in 2015; Birdman in 2014; Argo in 2012; and The King’s Speech in 2010. Last year’s winner The Trial Of The Chicago 7 earned an Oscar nomination but lost out to Nomadland on the night.

West Side Story picked up just the one SAG nomination for supporting actress Ariana DeBose, having landed five acting spots on the Bafta 2022 longlists earlier in the day.

In the television categories, Ted Lasso and Succession led the competition with five nominations each.

The nominations were announced by actors Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens via Instagram Live, joined by SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher. The 28th SAG Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday 27th February, live from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.
