Marie Kreutzer’s Corsage has been selected to represent Austria at the Academy Awards in the best international feature category.
The historical drama premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard earlier this year where it picked up a best actor award for Vicky Krieps (jointly awarded with Harka’s Adam Bessa).
Krieps plays the disgruntled Empress Elisabeth from the 19th-century who, upon turning 40, begins to rebel against her public image.
The cast also includes Colin Morgan, Florian Teichmeister and Katharina Lorenz.
Corsage is a co-production between Austria (Film AG), Luxembourg (Samsa Film), Germany (Komplizen Film) and France (Kazak Productions), with Paris-based Mk2 Films handling international sales.
The film has also screened at Sarajevo, Toronto and Jerusalem with appearances coming up at San Sebastian and London Film Festival, where it plays in official competition.
Picturehouse Entertainment will release the title in the UK and Ireland on December 30.
Corsage marks Austria’s 46th Oscar submission. The country has won the award twice before – for Michael Haneke’s Amour in 2012 and Stefan Ruzowitzky’s The Counterfeiters in 2007 – and has received a further two nominations.
Austria has also been disqualified twice. Sudabeh Mortezai’s Joy was disqualified in 2019 for having too much English dialogue and Michael Haneke’s Caché was controversially removed in 2005, owing to French not being the predominant language of Austria.
