Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon has been confirmed to world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, which runs May 16-27.
The festival will roll out its famous red carpet on May 20 (the first Saturday of the event) to welcome Scorsese and the Apple Original Film’s star-studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, Jillian Dion and Tantoo Cardinal among others.
The film will screen in the Palais’ Grand Théâtre Lumière before its October 6 release date Stateside and expands wide in theatres on October 20. In line with France’s strict windowing laws, the film will be released in France on October 18 via Paramount Pictures France and must wait 17 months before premiering on Apple TV+ in the country.
The festival remains mum on whether the film will premiere in or out of competition and will announce the full line-up in “mid-April”.
Set in 1920s Oklahoma, Killers Of The Flower Moon is based on David Grann’s best-selling book and written for the screen by Eric Roth and Scorsese. The film depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the “Reign of Terror”.
Killers Of The Flower Moon was produced alongside Imperative Entertainment, Sikelia Productions and Appian Way. Producers are Martin Scorsese, Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas and Daniel Lupi who worked alongside executive producers Leonardo DiCaprio, Rick Yorn, Adam Somner, Marianne Bower, Lisa Frechette, John Atwood, Shea Kammer and Niels Juul.
Scorsese is a Cannes regular, having won Cannes’ coveted Palme d’Or in 1976 with Taxi Driver and the best director award a decade later for After Hours. In 1998, he was the president of the jury that presented the Palme d’Or to Greek director Theo Angelopoulos for Eternity And A Day then chaired the Cinéfondation and short films jury alongside Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami four years later.
He has also been back on the Croisette representing numerous films at Cannes Classics with his Film Foundation, an organisation dedicated to protecting and preserving global cinema history.
The festival said in a statement that it is “looking forward to welcoming Martin Scorsese and the members of the Killers Of The Flower Moon team on the red carpet, which already promises to be memorable.”
The film was rumoured to be the festival’s opening night film, which leaves that desirable spot still open.
Potential openers include Disney and Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny, and Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City which stars Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Scarlett Johansson and Tilda Swinton.
