Anthony McCarten’s political thriller The Price Of Peace has added Mia Threapleton and Danny Huston to its main cast as production kicks off in London.
Guy Pearce, Jared Harris and Merab Ninidze also star in the film about the 1945 Potsdam Conference, when US president Harry S Truman (Pearce), UK prime minister Winston Churchill (Harris) and Soviet premier Joseph Stalin (Ninidze) came together at the end of the Second World War to shape the future of Europe and the world.
Threapleton has been cast as Mary Churchill, the youngest daughter of Winston and wife Clementine, while Huston joins in the role of Lieutenant General Leslie Groves, who was one of the architects of the Manhattan Project, the top-secret mission to develop the world’s first atomic bomb. The high-stakes drama centres on the three world leaders’ decisions and balance of power as political tensions rise and personal crises unfold.
The Price Of Peace is produced by Berlin and London-based Raccoon Features, the UK’s Muse of Fire Productions and the US’s Salloway Studios, in association with Spark Productions, Sub Rosa Group and France’s Ingara. SND is serving as co-producer and handling French distribution and international sales for the project, which launched at this year’s European Film Market in February. The US is co-repped by CAA Media Finance.
McCarten, a four-time Oscar nominee and screenwriter of Darkest Hour, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Theory Of Everything and The Two Popes, also penned the script.
The writer-director said: “The Potsdam Conference represented a crucial turning point in world history – the moment when the Second World War transformed into the Cold War. I’m thrilled to begin production with such an extraordinary cast bringing this pivotal moment to life.”
Ramy Nahas, director of international sales and distribution at SND, cited an “enthusiastic response from international buyers” at EFM and added: “The Price of Peace will resonate strongly with global audiences.”
