New Thai production and sales outfit Neramitnung Film is attending Busan’s ACFM for the first time with a slate of four titles, including a sequel to box office hit 4 Kings and Davy Chou-produced Doi Boy.
4 Kings Part 2 sees the return of a young drug trafficker from the first film – played by Ukrit Willibrord Dongabriel, aka Thai rapper D Gerrard – who is determined to seek revenge from two rival gangs, unleashing a new war of violence.
Filmmaker Puttipong Nakthong also returns to direct the sequel, which is set to start principal photography in mid-October. 4 Kings was the highest grossing Thai film of 2021.
Also on Neramitnung’s slate is Doi Boy, a LGBTQ-themed drama starring Arak Amornsupasiri (4 Kings), about a young Burmese masseur who develops a dangerous relationship with a corrupt policeman. The shoot is scheduled to start in November. Cambodian-French filmmaker Chou, whose Return To Seoul played in Un Certain Regard at this year’s Cannes, is producing for Thai director Nontawat Numbenchapol, whose documentary By The River received a special mention at Locarno in 2013.
Neramitnung’s ACFM titles also includes Chookiat “Matthew” Sakveerakul’s Taklee Genesis and Lee Thongkham’s There Will Be Zombies. The former is a sci-fi time travel adventure starring Paula Taylor, Peter Corp Dyrendal and Jenjira Pongpas (Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives). Director Chookiat is best known for 13 Beloved and Love Of Siam.
There Will Be Zombies is a high-concept zombie film, billed as Train To Busan meets Stranger Things. Lee has previously directed The Maid and The Lake.
Neramitnung Film says it is the sole financier of all four projects and handles their international sales. They are scheduled for release in the second half of 2023.
The Bangkok-based company made its market debut at Hong Kong Filmart earlier this year. It closed an English remake deal for its monster film Leio with UK-based SC Films before the Busan film market.
