Phil Clapp, UKCA 2025 conference

Phil Clapp is to depart his role as president of the International Union of Cinemas (UNIC) after 13 years, with UNIC to award him its honorary Achievement Award this summer.

He will leave the role on June 23, the day of UNIC’s General Assembly elections.

Clapp has served as UNIC president since 2013, as well as being chief executive of the UK Cinema Association (UKCA, formerly Cinema Exhibitors’ Association) since 2007. He will remain in his UKCA post.

He was most recently re-elected as UNIC president in 2024.

Clapp will receive the honorary award during a presentation at the opening ceremony of exhibitors’ trade event CineEurope, taking place from June 22-25 in Barcelona.

“Phil has been an exceptional leader and a tireless advocate for our industry,” said Laura Houlgatte, UNIC CEO. “His vision and commitment have been instrumental in strengthening UNIC and reinforcing the voice of European cinema exhibition. On a personal note, he has also been an invaluable mentor and source of guidance to me, and it has been a privilege to work alongside him.”

UNIC represents the interests of cinema trade associations and operators across 39 European countries and neighbouring regions. A UNIC statement described Clapp as “a driving force” within the organisation.

“Throughout his tenure, he has consistently championed the cultural, social and economic importance of cinemas, strengthening collaboration across the sector and reinforcing the voice of European exhibition on the global stage,” read the statement. “As he steps down from the presidency, this recognition reflects Phil Clapp’s longstanding dedication and service to UNIC. His contribution has left a lasting mark on both the organisation and the wider European exhibition sector.”
