Rai Cinema International Distribution has picked up international sales rights to Belgian director Manon Coubia’s debut feature Forest High (Forêt Ivre), which world premieres next month in the Berlinale’s Perspectives programme.
The film is the first non-Italian title to join the Rai Cinema International Distribution slate, part of a move by the Italian sales company to establish its presence in the international marketplace.
Coubia is a Belgian director and screenwriter known for her short films. She won the Pardo d’Oro at Locarno Film Festival in 2016 for L’Immense Retour (Romance) and was selected for Cannes Critics’ Week in 2017 with Les Enfants Partent À L’aube.
Forest High is set in the northern Alps, where three women take turns tending a mountain hut. Through the seasons, hikers come and go and stories bloom and fade, leaving each of them facing the silence. The film observes women who have chosen to withdraw from the world below, and are put to the test by this chosen solitude.
The Belgium-France co-production is produced by Belgian outfit The Blue Raincoat and France’s Aurora Films.
“We are proud to support such a bold and distinctive debut by a talented filmmaker,” said Fulvio Firrito, head of international sales at Rai Cinema International Distribution. “This project represents a further step forward for us, and we are grateful to the Belgian and French producers for entrusting us as their international distributor on such an original and profound project.”
Rai Cinema International Distribution’s slate at the upcoming EFM includes Gabriele Muccino’s Things We Don’t Say and Greta Scarano’s Siblings, which recently won the European Young Audience Award at the 38th European Film Awards.
