Universal/Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie has crossed $500m at the global box office in nine days, becoming the highest film of 2023 so far as well as the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.

At time of writing through Thursday April 13 the children’s film stood at $508.7m worldwide, $260.3m in North America, and $248.4m internationally heading into its second weekend when it will continue to soar.

Observers have speculated it could become the first film of the year to cross $1bn and with a light April in terms of family competition, that is looking increasingly likely. A sequel is expected to be greenlit imminently.

Territory updates were unavailable at time of writing, however The Super Mario Bros. Movie will soar past $300m in both North America and internationally any day now.

The film has overtaken Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania on $474.2m and $212.8m to rank as the highest-grossing release for the year to date globally and in North America, respectively.

Additionally, it has overhauled Warcraft’s $439m haul in 2016 and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu’s $449.8m take in 2019 to rank as the biggest video game adaption ever.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie overtook the $493m global haul of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train in 2020 to stand as the second highest-grossing animation since 2019 behind Universal/Illumination’s 2022 release Minions: The Rise Of Gru on $942.5m. Overall it ranks as the 10th highest-grossing global animation of all time.

The children’s smash is also the 12th highest Hollywood film released at the global box office since 2019, having overtaking 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage on $506.9m, and is one of only 13 Hollywood titles releases since 2019 to cross $500m at the global box office.

Five of those 13 films now hail from Universal, the other four being Jurassic World Dominion, Minions: The Rise Of Gru, No Time To Die, and F9 The Fast Saga.
