EXCLUSIVE: UK producer Victoria Thomas of Republic of Story alongside Akua Gyamfi’s The British Blacklist have launched No Password Required, an industry platform for Black and Global Majority-owned production companies across Europe.

The initiative is supported by the Film Distributors’ Association (FDA), Film Export UK, My Smash Media, ARTEF and the British Film Institute.  A directory mapping out Black and Global Majority-owned production companies across Europe will be made publicly available.

On June 12, the initiative will host the first edition of a dedicated industry market focused on Black and Global Majority-owned film production companies, taking place in London.

Future editions are planned across Europe. The market will feature curated showcases, pitch sessions, screenings, talks and informal gatherings.

The aim is to foster cross-border relationships, support co-productions, spotlight entrepreneurial producing talent, and create new pathways for creative and commercial exchange among culturally dual Europeans.

Applications to take part close on May 31.

“This isn’t just a directory, it’s a blueprint for ownership and collaboration,” said Thomas and Gyamfi. “Black and Global Majority creatives are already shaping the stories we consume, through narrative, performance, and influence. What’s missing is the infrastructure to support access to the market and finance for producers from these backgrounds.

”This initiative is about access to markets, visibility, and investment, laying the foundation for a future where these communities don’t just contribute to culture, they are empowered to lead and own the means of its production where they are interested to do so.”

“The No Password Required initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to championing diverse talent and creating access to meaningful opportunities across the industry,” said Melanie Hoyes, director of inclusion at the BFI. ”We’re proud to support this work and look forward to the learnings and actions that emerge.”

“The FDA is very pleased to sponsor this event, launching such an exciting initiative to support and encourage the future success of Black and Global Majority-owned film businesses in the UK and across Europe,” added Andy Leyshon, CEO of the FDA. ”The industry is reliant upon unique voices and storytelling talent to properly engage with future audiences.”
