
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has beaten Avengers: Endgame to set the record North American opening weekend after all, arriving on a confirmed $360m reported by Sony Pictures on Monday.
The updated number improves on the weekend estimate of $355m and exceeds Endgame’s $357.1m opening weekend in unadjusted terms, although the April 2019 number equates to $466.7m when factoring in inflation.
Nonetheless Sony’s poster child has delivered a spectacular debut – and earned a confirmed $932m worldwide – to keeps summer box office on course for a $4bn seasonal yield and keeps alive the goal of certaintly a $9bn and possibly a $10bn-plus year for the first time since pre-pandemic 2019.
Year-to-date stands at approximately $6.2bn per Rentrak, up 15.2% on last year by the same stage. Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $169.8 million on Friday in the highest opening day of all time, $101.5m on Saturday, and $88.7, on Sunday from 4,487 locations.
“Wow! 360 million thank-yous to all the filmmakers, actors, producers, and to my colleagues at Sony, who created such a fantastic film and an exceptional marketing and distribution campaign,” Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, said on Monday morning. “Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.”
In other records, Brand New Day became only the second film to surpass $300m in opening weekend, and established new industry marks for the biggest Thursday preview gross, and posted the second-highest Saturday gross of all time.
Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo star, and Destin Daniel Cretton directed.
Christopher Nolans The Odyssey ranked second on a confirmed $51.1m for $395.6m through Universal after three weekends in action.
