EXCLUSIVE: Strand Releasing has acquired North American rights to ACID title Drunken Noodles from Berlin-based M-Appeal on the first day of the market.

Drunken Noodles is the latest English-language feature from Argentinian-born, New York–based filmmaker Lucio Castro.

The queer drama stars Laith Khalifeh as a young art student who arrives in New York City to flat-sit for the summer. He begins interning at a gallery where an unconventional older artist he once encountered is being exhibited. The film co-stars Joel Isaac, Ezriel Kornel, and Matthew Risch.

Castro was inspired to write the story by the real-life artist Sal Salandra, now in his 70s and best known for his homoerotic “thread scenes” embroidery depicting sexual scenes.

The film is produced by Castro and Barton Cortright through their Alsina 427 company, with co-producers Joanne Lee and Julia Bloch, and executive producer Pierce Varous of Nice Dissolve.

Drunken Noodles is Castro’s third feature following After This Death, which premiered at the Berlinale, and his debut, End Of The Century  in 2019.

“Castro’s vision and previous work is something we have admired and we look forward to taking this film out to North American audiences after a robust festival release. His vision fits perfectly with Strand’s line of auteurs,” said Marcus Hu, co-president of Strand Releasing.

Strand also took rights to Dag Johan Haugerud’s Love/Sex/Dreams trilogy from M-Appeal. Other recent Strand releases include Rithy Panh’s Meeting With Pol Pot and Karim Ainouz’s Motel Destino
