EXCLUSIVE: Production is about to kick off in Cincinnati, Ohio, on March 12 on Number 9 Films and Killer Films’ Patricia Highsmith adaptation, reuniting Todd Haynes with recent Oscar winner Cate Blanchett.

Rooney Mara will star opposite Blanchett in the story of a 1950s department store assistant who falls for an older woman. The key cast includes Kyle Chandler and Sarah Paulson.

The Weinstein Company snapped up US rights to Carol in Cannes 2013. HanWay Films handles international sales and previously closed deals with the UK (StudioCanal), Australia (Transmission), Canada (eOne) and France (TF1).

Phyllis Nagy adapted the screenplay from Highsmith’s novel The Price Of Salt.

Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley of Number 9 Films are producing alongside Christine Vachon of Killer Films.

Number 9 Films developed the project with Film4, who co-finances with Goldcrest Films.

Blanchett previously starred as Bob Dylan in Haynes’ 2007 film I’m Not There, a role which secured her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
