Bernal will also star in the film, which has received backing from the Channel 4 BRITDOC foundation.

Integrated content production company Pulse has teamed up with Gael Garcia Bernal to produce drama documentary Who Is Dayani Cristal?.

The film, which will be directed by Marc Silver, is a co-production with Gael García Bernal’s production company, Canana Films and Silver’s company Silver Lining Films.

Who Is Dayani Cristal? follows the quest to identify an anonymous body found in the Arizona desert beyond the US-Mexican border, with the only clue being a tattoo reading ‘Dayani Cristal’.

The project, which is due to start shooting this month, has received backing from the Channel 4 BRITDOC Foundation.

It has come out of cross-platform project Resist, which invites members of the public to build a community and upload their own experiences of resistance against oppression.

Thomas Benski, MD and producer for Pulse said: “It’s fantastic to have the backing of The Channel 4 BRITDOC Foundation to ensure that the film is distributed by the right people. Who Is Dayani Cristal? is one of Pulse’s biggest projects to date, and a major foray into feature film which builds on our recent critical successes.”

Jess Search, chief executive of The Channel 4 BRITDOC Foundation added: “We are interested in supporting brilliant filmmakers whose work can make a difference.  We believe this is going to be a beautiful and moving film with the power to make people think again about immigration policies and their consequences.”
