Music Box Films acquires North American rights to Starlet
Music Box has picked up all North American rights to Sean Baker’s drama Starlet following its premiere at SXSW and will release in the autumn.
Newcomer Dree Hemingway, the great-granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway and daughter of Mariel Hemingway, stars in the story of a friendship that ensues when a young woman finds a stash of money inside a relic bought at a yard sale.
Eighty-five-year old Besedka Johnson earned a special jury recognition for her debut as the older woman who sells the item.
Blake Ashman-Kipervaser produced with Kevin Chinoy, Francesca Silvestri, Patrick Cunningham and Chris Maybach. Ted Hope, Shih-Ching Tsou, Saerom Kim, Saemi Kim, Giancarlo Canavesio and Sol Tryon served as executive producers.
“Although we didn’t make the connections until after we saw Starlet, we’ve enjoyed everything Sean Baker has done from Greg The Bunny through Prince Of Broadway, so in retrospect its not surprising we fell for Starlet,” Music Box Films managing director Ed Arentz said.
Music Box negotiated the deal with Josh Braun of Submarine.
