EXCLUSIVE: Thriller directed by Omer Fast acquired for international sales by The Match Factory.

The Match Factory has boarded international sales on Remainder, visual artist Omer Fast’s thriller now in pre-production.

Soda Pictures will distribute in the UK and Ireland; Piffl Medien has German rights.

Tom Sturridge is set to star in the story, adapted from Tom McCarthy’s novel, about a man who has to reconstruct his past out of lost memories; he gets a large financial settlement for an accident he can¹t remember without any wholly reliable witnesses.

Fast, who writes and directs, said the film is “an elliptical thriller about a person whose past catches up with him when he’s most vulnerable: In absolute control.”

The film will shoot for six weeks on location in London and Berlin this spring; post-production will be done in Hamburg.

Fast’s artworks are in permanent collections at Tate Modern and LACMA; his latest installation piece Everything That Rises Must Converge is part of Berlin’s Forum Expanded programme.

The UK-German co-production is produced by Natasha Dack of Tigerlily in co-production with Malte Grunert of Amusement Park Film and ZDF/Arte.

The project is backed by the BFI, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenberg, Filmforderung HamburgSchlewsig-Holstein. Additional support comes from Soda Film + Art and a consortium of art collectors.

Lizzie Francke, BFI Film Fund senior development & production executive said: “We are really excited to be supporting such a distinct visual artist as Omer Fast in his transition to feature film.

“The novelist Tom McCarthy has come up with such a clever puzzler in Remainder. With his provocative and visually surprising sensibility, Fast is a perfect match for it.”

Sturridge’s other upcoming roles include Richard Laxton’s Effie, Terrence Malick’s new untitled feature and Thomas Vinterberg’s Far From The Madding Crowd.

Tigerlily’s credits include She, A Chinese and 37 Uses For a Dead Sheep. Dack previously collaborated with Fast on his film Nostalgia in 2009.

Amusement Park has produced eight features since 2009, including Anton Corbijn’s A Most Wanted Man and David Mackenzie’s Perfect Sense.

Soda Pictures launched Soda Film + Art in early 2013 to focus on films with, by and about artists.
