Screen International is profiling all the winners of the third Global Production Awards, which were held tonight (May 19) at the Mademoiselle Gray Barriere in Cannes.
Film Commission of the Year - country
Winner: Spain Film Commission (Spain)
This award recognises a national film commission that has an established international reputation for exemplary service to international productions.
In crowning Spain Film Commission (SFC) as the winner, the judges noted how the institution has established itself as the leading audiovisual hub in the European Union, combining a strong local industry, major appeal for international productions and a growing presence of global platform centres.
In its submission, SFC described its success as being a direct result of the implementation of the Spain Audiovisual Hub plan, launched by the national government to transform and modernise the Spanish audiovisual industry and position it as a globally competitive leader.
The judges agreed. “SFC effectively demonstrated the importance of organic co-operation between civil and official entities when built on strong fundamentals,” said one.
Another judge added: “SFC excels in thought leadership and data-driven approaches to local solutions. Its study on the economic impact of Spain’s rebates for international film and television highlights the social and economic benefits of productions, fostering institutional support and enhanced fiscal incentives.”
One judge praised SFC as a benchmark for excellence in problem-solving and community-driven inclusivity, “with a demonstrated value chain of impact”. They pointed to the establishment of the first university chair in the film industry at Pablo de Olavide University, with a team of professors from more than 15 Spanish universities, and various tourism initiatives that turn filming locations into must-visit destinations.
