Need to know: Andrea Cornwell’s Lobo Films has shown impressive instincts when it comes to finding debut filmmakers — Rose Glass’s Saint Maud and Daniel Kokotajlo’s Apostasy were both nominated at the Baftas.

Cornwell is keen to tilt the focus of the company towards ambitious, mid-budget independent films. An example of this is Glass’ follow-up, Love Lies Bleeding, which premiered at Sundance in 2024, starring Kristen Stewart and shooting in New Mexico.

“The mid-budget level certainly seems like the most challenging space to be working in now in the UK, but that is the level where you can punch through internationally,” says Cornwell. “We’re talking to filmmakers with a bit more track record at the moment and will be coming close to production at the latter end of next year.”

Across its 10-year lifespan, Lobo has dabbled in TV and documentary with Apple TV series The Essex Serpent and doc Seahorse, but current energies are all in the film space. Lobo aims to shoot one or two films a year, with a development slate of around eight to 10 projects. The company’s next cinema release will be Dylan Southern’s The Thing With Feathers, with Vue Lumiere distributing in UK-Ireland cinemas in November.

Key personnel: Andrea Cornwell, founder and producer; Ellen Spence, producer.

Incoming: Wicker, starring Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgard, Peter Dinklage and Elizabeth Debicki, has wrapped, with a festival launch on track for 2026. The comedy feature, which filmed in Hungary, is directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson.

She Will director Charlotte Colbert’s next film is shooting from November in Spain and Paris, produced alongside fellow Brit 50 entry Recorded Picture Company. Lobo’s first partnership with Anton is a crime thriller, aiming for a 2026 shoot in New Mexico.

Andrea Cornwell says: “Producers are the best cheerleaders of our own films. For us to be recognised as filmmakers remains a key challenge.”
