Marleen Slot

Need to know: Amsterdam-based Viking Film was set up by Marleen Slot in 2011 after she had worked as a producer at Lemming Film for many years. The company name refers to Slot’s background as the daughter of a fisherman from a community in the north of Holland, which had once been under the sway of the Vikings. Slot cites her collaboration with directors Sacha Polak and animator Mascha Halberstad as crucial to Viking’s growth. The company’s latest feature with Halberstad is animated film Oink, which premiered in Berlin’s Generation KPlus and is sold by LevelK. Halberstad and Slot also recently formed the Holy Motion stop-motion studio in Arnhem. On the TV side, Viking has produced kids’ animated series Heads Together (Kop Op) from Job, Joris & Marieke. Slot runs Viking on her own, bringing in “great freelancers” when needed. She is very active as a co-producer with credits including Latin American titles Neon Bull (2015) and Rojo (2018). She aspires to work on an international level and to tell stories that stretch beyond Dutch borders.

Key personnel: Marleen Slot, founder and producer.

Incoming: Slot’s next film with Polak, with whom she first worked on 2015 Berlinale Forum feature Zurich, is Silver Haze. It is the director’s second film to shoot in the UK after acid-attack drama Dirty Gods, and is now in post-production. She also recently collaborated with Belgian producer Dries Phlypo on family drama Sea Sparkle.

Marleen Slot says: “I am a very director-driven producer. I choose projects for the talent. For me, it is also important that I have a good time working on these films. A lot of the filmmakers I work with, I also end up being their friend.”
