The Taipei Film Festival has unveiled its opening films and nominees of its competition section.

Jump! A-shin by Lin Yu-hsien and Toast by S.J. Clarkson will be the opening films of the 13th Taipei Film Festival, which will be held June 24-July 16 in Taipei City, Taiwan’s capital city.

Lin Yu-hsien’s Jump! A-shin, Cheng Fen-fen’s Bear it and Giddens Ko’s You Are the Apple of My Eye are among the 10 feature-length films nominated for the top prize of Taipei Awards, which includes cash of $36,000 (NT$1m).

As one of the main competition section of the Taipei Film Festival, Taipei Awards, a recognition for Taiwanese filmmakers and films, selects 44 films this year in the competition that include feature films, animated films and documentaries, announced by festival chairwoman Silvia Chang (Run Papa Run) in Taipei today. The festival’s other competition section – the International New Talent Competition — will announce its selections next week.

In addition to the two competition sections, Taipei Film Festival also holds several screening sessions including an annual City in Focus sidebar (this year honours London). About 30 classic and contemporary UK films will be showcased during the period of three weeks.

UK Classics will feature films such as Brief Encounter by David Lean, The 39 Steps by Alfred Hitchcock and three films by James Ivory. The showcase of UK contemporary films will include Ralph Fiennes’ directing debut Coriolanus and Jon Amiel’s Creation. There will also be a retrospective screening of films by the legendary Michael Powell.
