Features from Chile, Turkey, Egypt and France will screen at the 32nd Slamdance Film Festival that takes place for the second time in Los Angeles from February 19-25.

Festival programmers viewed more than 10,000 submissions for features, shorts, episodics and games, of which 28% came from Los Angeles area filmmakers. Half of line-up of 141 features and shorts hail from female, trans, and nonbinary directors, 41.4% are from BIPOC creators, and 9.7% from creators with visible and non-visible disabilities.

Slamdance’s returning Made In L.A. programme highlights 12 features and 23 shorts projects from the local community. Also returning is Market Monday on February 23, featuring submissions programmed by industry veteran Ted Hope from the NonDē Film movement focused on helping independent filmmakers find a sustainable cinema ecosystem that does not rely on corporations.

Femme Film Friday on February 20 features screenings of films by female, trans, and nonbinary directors and a panel presented by Women Independent Producers entitled “Navigating Self Care as a Producer.” Writers Day on February 21 brings panels focused on screenwriting, and Slamdance’s Student Symposium and Programmer’s Day on February 22 comprises workshops and panels. The festival runs virtually from February 24 to March 6 on the Slamdance Channel.

All films selected in the Narrative Features and Documentary Features competition categories are directorial debuts without US distribution and budgeted under $1m. The festival will take place in Hollywood at the Directors Guild of America, Landmark Sunset, and 2220 Arts, while the closing night ceremony is being held at the Egyptian Theater.

“At a moment when our industry is facing real uncertainty, Slamdance remains deeply committed to supporting filmmakers and bringing our community together,” Peter Baxter, co-founder of Slamdance, said.
