Taiwanese family drama Coo-Coo 043 won best film and Hong Kong crime drama Limbo picked up the most prizes at the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan on Saturday night (November 19) as Hong Kong cinema made a grand return winning nine awards.
The prizes were quite evenly distributed this year, with no single film sweeping the 59th edition of the annual ceremony, which was held at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei.

Chan Ching-lin’s feature debut Coo-Coo 043, set against the backdrop of pigeon racing, also won best new performer for Hu Jhih-ciang.
Also picking up two awards was Laha Mebow’s Taiwanese indigenous people drama Gaga, which saw Mebow became the first woman from Taiwan to win the best director prize in the history of the awards while 74-year-old Kagaw Piling won best supporting actress.
Hong Kong crime thriller Limbo won the biggest number of awards with four prizes including best adapted screenplay and three technical honours.
Hong Kong drama The Sunny Side Of The Street took three big prizes, including best actor for veteran Anthony Wong as a taxi driver who develops a special bond with a Pakistani child refugee as well as best new director and best original screenplay for Malaysia-born Hong Kong-based writer-director Lau Kok-rui.
The best actress award went to Taiwan-born Hong Kong-based veteran Sylvia Chang for her role in Hong Kong drama A Light Never Goes Out, in which she plays a widow determined to fulfil her late husband’s wish of reviving an iconic neon sign.
Acclaimed Hong Kong director Ann Hui served as this year’s jury president. She was the first jury president from Hong Kong since fellow director Johnnie To resigned in 2019. That was the year when China exerted pressure on mainland Chinese filmmakers, which led to a boycott order on the Golden Horse Awards. No high-profile mainland Chinese productions and Hong Kong-China co-productions have since entered the awards until this year.
Huang Shuli was one of the rare mainland Chinese directors who showed up at the Golden Horse Awards in recent years. Last night, he was on hand to receive the best documentary short film prize for Will You Look At Me, which won the Queer Palm at Cannes earlier this year.
The glamorous event was well supported by the local industry, with stars and filmmakers such as Chen Bo-lin, Gingle Wang, Huang Hsin-yao, Vivian Sung, Liu Kuan-ting, Midi Z, Gwei Lun-mei, Chang Chen and Alyssa Chia as presenters.
Overseas presenters included Shoplifters director Hirokazu Kore-eda and actress-director Hitomi Kuroki, both from Japan, as well as Australia-based Hong Kong director Clara Law who was named best director last year for Drifting Petals but was unable to attend in-person due to the pandemic.
This year’s edition marked the first for Taiwanese award-winning cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bing as chairman.
