‘The Sacred Cave of Kamukuwaka’

Nine immersive projects exploring the subject of ‘Transformations’ have been selected for this year’s CPH:LAB Inter:Active Symposium, which will run as part of the CPH: DOX film festival (March 23-April 3).

This year’s symposium will take place in-person after the first two editions ran online in 2020 and 2021.

Three of the nine projects selected were part-produced in the UK: Oceanic Feeling, The Pathogen Of War and The Sacred Cave Of Kamukuwaka.

Oceanic Feeling is a 360-degree VR documentary and installation that takes viewers on a journey through the metamorphoses of the mysterious European Eel. The work is co-directed by Berlin-based Joey Bania and Munich Filmschool graduate Lion Bischof, and is produced by Denmark’s Tine Mikkelsen; it is a co-production between Germany, Denmark and the UK, with Zentropa Berlin leading production.

Yasmin Fedda’s The Pathogen Of War is an interactive installation in which an Iraqi physician turned medical anthropologist uncovers how conflict is linked to the evolution and spread of a bacteria that has defeated the world’s superpowers. The UK-Lebanon co-production was produced by Dan Davies for Black Leaf Films.

The Sacred Cave Of Kamukuwaka presents a digital resurrection of ancient Amazonian rock art by the indigenous Wauja community. The VR/mixed reality/installation work is directed by Wauja filmmaker Pirata Waura, and produced between Brazil, Spain, the UK and Portugal.

The Inter:Active Symposium is curated and hosted by former Sheffield Doc/Fest acting director Mark Atkin, who is now head of studies at CPH:LAB. The prototypes will be presented on March 28, followed by a pop-up exhibition.

CPH:LAB has also partnered with French media collection Forum Des Images on three new awards for this year’s projects. The main winner will be invited to participate in the XR Financing Market of the 2022 NewImages Festival from June 8-12 in Paris, while two further projects will receive accreditations for the event.

CPH:DOX film festival plans to hold its first in-person event since 2019 from March 23 to April 3 this year, with the LAB running in-person for the first time.

“This year the Inter:Active Symposium will bring together artists, curators, funders and distributors across film, games, theater, fine art and XR, to discuss where we are headed and how to collaborate to get there together,” said the festival.

Earlier this month CPH:DOX confirmed Lars Ostenfeld’s Into The Ice as its opening film, in the main competition; and selected 30 projects for its financing and co-production market CPH:FORUM.
