Screen can reveal the exclusive first-look trailer for Jennifer Baichwal’s upcoming Hot Docs opening night selection Into The Weeds ahead of its world premiere on April 28.

Sphere Films (formerly WaZabi Films) handles worldwide sales excluding Canada and will be introducing the film to buyers at the Cannes Marché next month. Mongrel Media distributes in Canada.

Into The Weeds tells the story of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson, a former Bay Area groundskeeper who takes on a multinational agrochemical corporation after a terminal cancer diagnosis. Baichwal follows Johnson through his battle, setting his personal journey against a global environmental crisis.

The film is produced by Baichwal and long-time partner Nicholas de Pencier. Baichwal previously opened the Toronto festival in 2009 with Act Of God and her credits include Anthropocene: The Human Epoch (co-directed with Edward Burtynsky and de Pencier) and Manufactured Landscapes. She was the subject of the Focus On retrospective at Hot Docs 2008.

Baichwal, de Pencier, Johnson, his wife Araceli and other guests will attend the opening night screening at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema to introduce the film and participate in a Q&A. Into The Weeds will screen again at Hot Docs on April 29 and May 7.
