‘Nowhere To Lay My Eyes’

Cinema Guild has acquired North American distribution rights to Hong Sangsoo’s Nowhere To Lay My Eyes, ahead of its world premiere in the main competition of Locarno Film Festival.

The deal was closed with South Korea’s Finecut.

Marking the 35th feature of the prolific South Korean auteur, the cast is led by regular collaborator Kim Minhee, who won a Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 2017 for On The Beach At Night Alone and best performance at Locarno in 2024 for By The Stream.

In Nowhere To Lay My Eyes, she plays Sanghee, who visits her mother on Jeju Island, 10 years after last seeing her. Her stepfather is making a documentary about a “grass tomb”, while her mother has made money from her successful restaurant. She also meets her stepfather’s daughter, who has just started painting.

Sanghee, who works for a snack import company and makes short films in her spare time, spends two days with them as needless advice and cheap compliments are passed back and forth.

The cast also features Hong regulars Kwon Haehyo, Shin Seokho and Park Miso, alongside Choi Myeonggil.

Cinema Guild upcoming releases include Otar Iosseliani’s restorations, Hong’s The Day She Returns while recent releases include Kamal Aljafari’s With Hasan in Gaza, Hong’s What Does That Nature Say to You and Aleksandre Koberidze’s Dry Leaf.
