EXCLUSIVE: Screen can reveal the first teaser trailer for Banjong Pisanthanakun’s Thai horror Inherit, ahead of its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival.

The film stars Davika Hoorne – from Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prize winner A Useful Ghost – as Woranart, who returns home looking as young and beautiful as when she disappeared 50 years ago.

However, she has not returned for a reunion with her wealthy family but as the vessel of an ancient centipede spirit, which seeks to pass its curse onto Woranart’s 18-year-old granddaughter, Oui (Baipor Thitiya Jirapornsilp). The cast also includes Sinjai Plengpanich, Trin Settachoke and Warattaya Nilkuha.

Barunson E&A, the South Korean studio known for producing Oscar-winner Parasite, handles non-Asia sales, including North America, Europe, the Middle East and airlines.

It marks the first collaboration between Barunson E&A and GDH559, the Thai powerhouse behind How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies and Human Resource among many other hits. GDH559 handles Asia sales and the film is also produced by Tofu Films (The Red Envelope).

It is also the first time Barunson E&A has repped a film by director Banjong, known for blockbuster titles Pee Mak, Shutter and The Medium. It marks a reunion between the filmmaker and actress Hoorne, who starred in his 2013 horror comedy romance Pee Mak, which ranked as Thailand’s highest-grossing film of all time.

Inherit is based on the seminal Thai horror novel Tayard Asoon — first published in 1991 and kept in print for decades through multiple reprints and television adaptations — Inherit is the property’s first feature-film adaptation.

The screenplay was written by Banjong, Thamsatid Charoenrittichai, Chantavit Dhanasevi.

It will receive its world premiere in the Centrepiece section of TIFF and is set for release in Thailand on November 19.
