Los Angeles-based International Documentary Association (IDA) has launched an emergency assistance programme for international documentary filmmakers whose work puts them in imminent and extreme personal physical danger.

A six-month pilot programme opened on March 9 to offer eligible filmmakers a one-time emergency grant of between $500 and $5,000.

“This programme comes after we conducted a consultation and field research across countries and different fields to see what IDA should deliver for the documentary community,” explained IDA’s executive director, Dominic Willsdon. “The main part of our plan in the past 12-18 months has been to build out a more consistent and more comprehensive advocacy programme.”

“What we have decided here is to design something quite specific and well-crafted and then expand this over time. It’s a pilot, but something that we are going to continue to do. It will change based on what we learn about the other kinds of needs.”

The pilot has initially been supported financially by IDA’s own year-end fundraising campaign last year, and successful applicants can expect to receive funding within no more than five business days once their request for support has been approved.
