Memento International has boarded world sales on art-inspired love story Bonnard, Pierre & Marthe about the eponymous renowned French painter and his wife and muse ahead of next week’s AFM.

Vincent Macaigne and Cécile de France star as the titular pair alongside Stacy Martin, Anouk Grinberg and André Marcon as Claude Monet. Actor/filmmaker Martin Provost directs the Les Films du Kiosque production. The project is now in post-production.

Bonnard, known as “the painter of happiness”, is considered to be one of the greatest French artists of the 20th century, who bridged impressionism and abstraction with bold colours and a passion for painting elements of everyday life. The film focuses on his relationship with Marthe de Méligny, who became his muse and featured in more than a third of his work.

The €8m feature is produced by François Kraus and Denis Pineau-Valencienne for Les Films du Kiosque, whose credits include How To Be A Good Wife and Standing Tall.  Provost’s previous films include Séraphine, winner of best film at the 2009 César awards, The Midwife and How To Be A Good Wife.

Memento Distribution will release the film in France in 2023.

Memento’s 2022 slate also includes two international Oscar  entries – Cinema Sabaya from Israel and Boy From Heaven from Sweden – as well as San Sebastian prize-winner Something You Said Last Night.

It is also continuing sales on Bruno Dumont’s anticipated sci-fi drama The Empire, in which French actress Lyna Khoudri is due to star alongside Happening breakout Anamaria Vartolomei and Call My Agent!’s Camille Cottin.

The three actresses replace the previously announced Lily Rose Depp, Virginie Efira and Adele Haenel.
