Sentimental Value Oscar nominee Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas has completed filming for a new role, leading Even Hafnor’s Norwegian Christmas tragicomedy Small Talk.

Production has wrapped this week in Norway on the feature, which is based on Hafnor’s short film and play of the same name.

In Small Talk, Lilleaas plays Elisabeth. Eager for a picture-perfect Christmas with her boyfriend’s family, Elisabeth embarks on a journey through awkward silences and cheerful denial, discovering that fitting in isn’t quite as simple as she hoped. Lilleaas stars alongside newcomer Steffen Holta.

The film is produced by Rebekka Rognøy for Norway’s Bacon Pictures OSL, with co-producers Gary Cranner of Mantra Film and Kristian Landmark of Landmark Film. Øystein Mamen is director of photography.

Bacon’s Magne Lyngner is executive producer, with backers including the Norwegian Film Institute. Scanbox Entertainment will distribute the film in the Nordics.

Norwegian actress Lilleaas is nominated for best supporting actress at this weekend’s Academy Awards, for her role as Agnes Borg Pettersen in Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value. She has received international recognition for the role since the film’s premiere in Competition at Cannes last year, including nominations at the Bafta Film Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and recognition by numerous critics circles.

Small Talk is a feature debut for Norwegian writer-director Hafnor, after shorts including 2015’s (also) Small Talk, 2017’s Reconstruction and 2019’s Fun Factory.

Last year Rognøy, Cranner and Lyngner produced Janicke Askevold’s debut Solomamma, which launched at Locarno Film Festival.
