‘Blue Heron’

EXCLUSIVE: Conic has acquired UK-Ireland distribution rights to Sophy Romvari’s debut feature Blue Heron.

The distributor is scheduling a theatrical release for later in 2026, having acquired the title from sales agent MoreThan Films.

The film had its world premiere at Locarno last August where it won the First Feature Award; before a North American premiere at Toronto, where it took the Best Canadian Discovery prize.

It has since played San Sebastian, where it received a Special Mention in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera strand; and had a UK premiere at BFI London Film Festival.

Set on Vancouver Island, Canada in the late 1990s and inspired by Romvari’s own upbringing, Blue Heron follows eight-year-old Sasha and her Hungarian immigrant family as they attempt to build a new life, only to be destabilised by the increasingly dangerous behaviour of her older brother Jeremy.

Eylul Guven and Edik Beddoes lead the cast, alongside Iringo Reti, Adam Tompa, Amy Zimmer, Liam Serg and Preston Drabble.

The film was produced by Canada’s Nine Behind Productions and Hungary’s Boddah, in association with Memory, Simbelle Productions, Tinygiant, and Ursa Major, with funding from Telefilm Canada and the National Film Institute Hungary.

Canadian filmmaker Romvari’s shorts have previously debuted at Toronto, including Norman Norman in 2018 and Still Processing in 2020.
