EXCLUSIVE: French boutique sales agency Stranger Films has acquired Ukrainian documentary Traces by Alisa Kovalenko and co-director Marysia Nikitiuk for worldwide rights excluding Ukraine and Poland, ahead of its world premiere in Berlinale’s Panorama section.
Traces shines a light on six Ukrainian women who, after surviving conflict-related sexual violence and torture during Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, refuse to remain silent.
The film is produced by Olha Bregman and Natalia Libet of 2Brave Productions, and is supported by Polish Film Institute, International Media Support, Ukrainian Film Academy in cooperation with Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, in association with Sema Ukraine & Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation.
Arte France has pre-bought the rights for Arte platforms for its territories under the title Survivantes De L’invasion
Traces marks the third collaboration between Stranger Films and Kovalenko following 2023 Berlinale title We Will Not Fade Away and 2025 CPH:DOX premiere Dear Théo.
“Traces feels like a very natural continuation of our collaboration with Alisa Kovalenko,” said Stranger Films’ Tijana Djukic, head of sales and acquisitions, and Oksana Lapshuk Dykovska, sales & acquisitions manager. “Her documentaries form a powerful and coherent body of work responding to the war in Ukraine, combining political urgency with a rare emotional and artistic precision. Traces carries this voice forward with remarkable strength.”
