Marcus Pfister’s beloved children’s book The Rainbow Fish is being adapted into a feature animation by Studiocanal Germany and German writer, director and puppeteer Florian Moch.
Filming in Augsburg, Germany is underway and will continue until mid-July. Studiocanal Germany is producing alongside Claussen + Putz Filmproduktion and Zodiac Pictures, having previously collaborated on The Robber Hotzenplotz, The Little Witch and Heidi.
Moch is a longtime director, author and puppet maker for the Augsburg Puppet Theatre. The film’s underwater world is being brought to life through traditional puppetry, with Augsburg Puppet Theatre collaborating on the project.
Studiocanal is handling worldwide sales and will release in Germany on November 19.
The book was first published in 1992 and has now sold over 30 million copies. It follows the most beautiful fish in the ocean, who is also vain and proud, which alienates the other fish. As a result, he becomes increasingly lonely. When he loses one of his beloved glittering scales, he learns a valuable life lesson.
The German voice cast includes Jannik Schümann, Luna Wedler, Bjarne Mädel, Andrea Sawatzki, Hella von Sinnen, Mechthild Großmann, Patrick Bach, TV host Tobi Krell, comedian Oliver Kalkofe, content creator Tom Böttcher and musician Bela B. Felsenheimer.
The film is supported by FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFF), Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM), Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, the German Federal Film Board (FFA), the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), as well as the Zurich Film Foundation and the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (BAK).
