EXCLUSIVE: Italy’s Lucky Red has acquired Berenger Thouin’s The Golden Age (L’Age d’Or) ahead of the film’s world premiere as the sole new fiction feature playing in Cannes Classics.
Films Boutique is selling the film, which it has also sold to Bir Film for Turkey.
The film is a fusion of fiction and archival footage from the Gaumont Pathé Archives that follows its characters through the 20th century and presents previously unseen footage of major historical events.
It centres on a woman born in a village butcher shop who dreams of becoming a countess and follows her over the years as her life intertwines with the period’s great upheavals and becomes a fiercely free woman. Souheila Yacoub stars alongside Vassili Schneider, Yile Yara Vianello and Pierre-Antoine Billon.
Thouin’s debut feature was 10 years in the making and blends scenes of contemporary actors shot between France, Italy and Brazil with footage from the great floods of Paris to images of both World Wars, brought together with image and sound editing and special effects.
The Golden Age is produced by Carine Ruszniewski from GoGoGo Films in France and Enrica Capra from Graffiti Film in Italy. Pyramide Distribution will release it in France.
“[The Golden Age] is an incredible experience. I loved it,” said Lucky Red’s founder and CEO Andrea Occhipinti.
