‘The Odyssey’

Ahead of what is expected to be its huge opening weekend, The Odyssey grossed $17.6m from preview screenings in 3,300 North American cinemas on Thursday (July 16), the biggest domestic preview take of the year so far.

The performance just beat the $17.5m that Toy Story 5 took from North American previews one month ago.

In international markets where it opened on Wednesday (July 15) or Thursday, the film has taken $22.2m over its first two days.

Universal Pictures releases The Odyssey today (July 17) in 3,919 North American theatres and over the weekend in 73 markets around the world.

The much-anticipated Christopher Nolan epic, with a reported budget of $250m, is being tipped to gross $85m-$100m over its first weekend in North America, and $200m or more from the international marketplace.

The North American launch would then make the film Nolan’s biggest domestic opener since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and the director’s fourth biggest domestic opener ever.

Oppenheimer, Nolan’s most recent release, opened in 2023 with $82.5m from North America and went on to take $330.1m domestically and $645.7m internationally, for a global tally of $975.8m.

The Odyssey’s international rollout this weekend will reach all markets except China, Japan, Korea and CIS. The film will open on 25,100 screens in more than 13,300 locations (Oppenheimer opened in the same markets across 11,300 locations and 17,500 screens).

In France, The Odyssey grossed $4.9m over its first two days, making it number one in the market with a 40% share of total admissions.

In Italy it took $2.5m on Thursday, Universal’s biggest ever opening day in the market.

In Australia, the film reached $3.7m through Friday, putting it 51% ahead of Oppenheimer. Mexico produced $1.5m on Thursday, 70% above Oppenheimer

The film opened on Thursday in Germany with $1.5m and on the same day in Brazil with $883,000.

Shot using new Imax film technology, The Odyssey stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o, with Zendaya and Charlize Theron. Emma Thomas and Nolan produced for their Syncopy company. The executive producer is Thomas Hayslip.
