Toho will release Godzilla Minus Zero, Takashi Yamazaki’s sequel to his Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, in Japan on November 3 with the North American release through GKids to follow on November 6.
November 3 holds a special place in Godzilla lore and marks the date of the original theatrical release of Godzilla in 1954. The Godzilla Minus Zero release is the first time a Godzilla film will open so close together in Japan and North America.
Plot details remain under wraps. The action adventure is in production and is being produced by Toho Studios and Robot, with VFX provided by Shirogumi Inc. Release dates for additional territories will be announced at a later date.
Godzilla Minus One opened in Japan on November 3 2023 en route to $48.2m, while the North American release followed neatly one month later on December 1 2023. It earned $57.1m in North America and more than $116m at the worldwide box office – the highest amount for a Godzilla film.
The 2023 tentpole told of a guilt-ridden kamikaze pilot battling a monster laying siege to Japan and went on to win the Oscar for visual effects.
“GKids is proud to bring Godzilla Minus Zero to North American audiences, following the incredible global reception of Godzilla Minus One,” GKids president David Jesteadt said. “This next chapter is sure to become another defining moment for the most colossal monster ever to dominate the screen. It is only fitting that this bold, new Godzilla event be experienced in its fullest theatrical glory, and we’re honored that Toho has entrusted us to carry this legacy forward.”
After Toho acquired GKids in 2024, GKids oversaw a 4K remaster and theatrical re-release of 2016’s Shin Godzilla, directed by Hideaki Anno and co-directed by Shinji Higuchi.
