Ruben Ostlund at the 2022 EFAs

Ruben Ostlund’s class warfare comedy Triangle Of Sadness was the big winner at the 2022 European Film Awards (EFAs), which took place today (December 10) in Reykjavík.

The class warfare comedy won best European film, director, screenwriter and actor, for Zlatko Burić.

Vicky Krieps was also a winner as best European actress for Corsage.

Mantas Kvedaravičius’ Mariupolis 2 won the European documentary prize, whilst Alain Ughetto’s No Dogs Or Italians Allowed picked up the animated feature award.

Fernando León de Aranoa’s The Good Boss, which stars Javier Bardem and won six Goyas, received the European comedy prize.

The 4,400 members of the European Film Academy voted for the awards.  

The prizes for cinematography, editing, production design, costume design, make-up & hair, original score, sound and visual effects were determined by an eight-member jury and unveiled on November 23, with Belfast and All Quiet On The Western Front leading the winners.

The EFAs also presented the Europe Sustainability Award - Prix Film4Climate to the European Commission for its European Green Deal. European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen accepted the award by video message.

The Eurimages Co-Production Award was a symbolic group award given to the producers of Ukraine, accepted at the ceremony by Julia Sinkevych (Heat Singers) and Darya Bassel (Butterfly Vision).

The European Achievement in World Cinema award was given to Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman, presented to the director by EFA chairman Mike Downey.

The European Innovative Storytelling award went to Marco Bellochio for his TV series Exterior Night, about the kidnapping and murder of former Italian prime minister Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades terrorist group.

German filmmaker Margarethe von Trotta received the European Lifetime Achievement award. She is only the third female director to receive the award after Agnes Varda in 2014 and Hungarian writer/director Marta Meszaros last year.
