EXCLUSIVE: Italian sales agent True Colours has boarded Giorni Felici, the new feature by Susanna Nicchiarelli, an adaptation of the graphic novel by Zuzu.

Nicchiarelli’s director credits include Venice competition films Miss Marx and Chiara and Venice Horizons winner Nico, 1988.

The film explores the journey of 20-year-old Claudia, a girl torn between past and future loves, but with a peculiarity. When feelings overwhelm her, when she gets excited or angry, she turns into a creature with white wings, tusks and feline paws.

It is billed as a story about abuse, protection, growing up and change, but most of all about finding the courage to show others who we really are.

Giorni Felici will star Carlotta Gamba (Gloria!, Vermiglio, Doestoevskji) and Riccardo Scamarcio (Tre Piani, Caravaggio, I Villeggianti).

The film is produced by Vivo Film with Rai Cinema, in co-production with Tarantula, and will start shooting in Rome during the summer. Vivo Film currently has The Last One for the Road by Francesco Sossai, produced with Rai Cinema, in Cannes’s Un Certain Regard.

Nicchiarelli said: “There are parts of ourselves that we are afraid of: aspects of our personality that we feel essential to our survival but that we fear may scare and drive away the people we love. This film is about loving and being loved, and about looking for a recognition in the eyes of the other; but it is also a film about abuse, and how to recognize it. It speaks to young people, and to everyone else, because we all manage our emotions, question our freedom and try to understand who we really are and what we really want, at all stages of life.”

Vivo Film said: “We are thrilled to support Susanna once again on her new journey into the exploration of female identity, as well as the challenges and contradictions faced by younger generations. We believe this story will immerse audiences in a deeply imaginative universe through the unique portrait of a “creature” of today’s world.”

Elliot Gustin Hollman of True Colours said: “The boldness and sensitivity of Susanna’s vision captivated us from the very first reading of the script. Giorni Felici marks the beginning of a new chapter for True Colours as the home of daring and high-quality Italian arthouse cinema. We’re proud to stand alongside Vivo Film in bringing her unique voice to the world.”
