President Donald Trump has renewed calls for a tariff on films made outside the US in a social media post today.

On his Truth Social platform, he said: “Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing “candy from a baby.” California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit!”

“Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DJT”

The US president first threatened the 100% tariff back in May, referencing incentives used by other countries to lure away studios and filmmakers.

Following this, more than 100 film and TV organisations signed a statement calling on governments to stand firm and safeguard the systems that support the indie sector.

However, no further details or apparent progress on the measures followed Trump’s initial announcement until now, with filmmakers among those questioning the viability of such a tariff. For example, Wes Anderson joked during Cannes: “Can you hold up the movie in customs? It doesn’t ship that way.”

Trump’s latest social post references California governor Gavin Newsom, a prominent political opponent of the US president.
